Letter to Tom Barrett

Published Friday, May 18

What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Dave Begel writes Milwaukee Mayor and Wisconsin gubernatorial hopeful Tom Barrett a letter.

Urban spelunking: Dome of the Basilica of St. Josaphat

Published Wednesday, May 16

A big fan of behind the scenes visits, I've traversed catwalks soaring high over concert stages, descended into the basements of schools and gone pretty much anywhere folks with keys will let me go. But the trip to the top of the dome of the Basilica of St. Josaphat on 6th and Lincoln was a journey unlike any I've taken before.

Is this recall election fair? Image

Is this recall election fair?

Published Monday, May 14

As far as I'm concerned, recall elections were designed to deal with politicians who have committed acts of gross malfeasance. People like former Sheboygan Mayor Jim Ryan, who was apparently in a constant state of breaking the law, come to mind. He was tossed out office, and rightfully so. But while some are alleging shady business on behalf of the governor, the reason most people want to recall Walker is because they don't like how he's governed in the last year and a half.

I recently read Michelle Alexander's book, "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness." It takes head-on the "elephant in the room" concerning race in America. I feel it is a must read for anyone interested in equality and social justice.

MPD officers learn first-hand combat medic skills in realistic tactical training

Published Tuesday, April 24

When police find themselves in a really bad situation there's only one way out: and that's to rely on their training to save victims and each other when a scene is too hot for traditional EMTs. While police are regularly shouldered with the job of neutralizing a threat, the task of tending to the injured while an active shooter looms is very perilous. But training can make such situations more familiar. Our Andy Tarnoff was fortunate enough to join along in a recent training exercise.
