1. Driver brings home the gold on "DWTS"
The triumph of Donald Driver last night in "Dancing With The Stars" was, as much as anything, a triumph of charm over beauty.
2. Five time travel movies definitely worth your time
This weekend, "Men in Black 3" sends America's favorite black-suited gentlemen (after "Mad Men," of course) back to the '60s. Before you check in with Agents J and K, however, here are five other time travel-based movies from the past that are definitely worth watching in the present.
3. No epidural needed for pain-free "What to Expect"
Though it's certainly overstuffed, women and rom-com-fearing men alike should both find something amusing in "What to Expect When You're Expecting."
4. "Battleship" sinks
Move over sequels, reboots, remakes and movies based on books - Hollywood's taking its inspiration from its dusty shelf of children's games now. What could possibly go wrong?
5. "The Dictator" is a comedy of excess
By now, it's fair to say moviegoers know to check their political correctness at the door of any of Sacha Baron Cohen's flicks. He most certainly has, and it's best to meet the um, artist, at his level.
6. Five awful movies starring pop stars
The upcoming "Battleship" can't promote Rihanna too hard considering the dubious history of pop stars on film. Hollywood scored a couple of hits, but there's been far more misses, including these five legendarily awful misfires.
7. Point Fish Fry & A Flick is ready to roll
The Pabst Theater Foundation, Discovery World and Bartolotta Restaurant Group have announced the 2012 dates and titles for the fourth annual outdoor movie series today.
8. "Dark Shadows" a vampire tale sucked dry of life
After "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands," Hollywood seemed to have found a fascinating visual mind in Tim Burton. Cut to 20 years later, and Burton's signature style is more sigh-inducing than surprising.
9. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" is worth checking into
Movie lovers and wanderlusters alike are poised find something worthwhile in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," opening in theaters today.
10. I love Milwaukee television
It was late. I was flipping around the basic cable stations here in Milwaukee and discovered something. It's awesome. Beyond awesome.
11. Moviegoers assemble! "The Avengers" is a must-see
Are you one of the unlucky souls who hasn't already been to a screener of "The Avengers" and isn't currently in one of its many midnight showings? Remedy this immediately.
12. Diary of a Mad Man
For years now, the ever-popular television series "Mad Men" has entertained, delighted and revealed some fundamental truths about advertising. For the most part, we in the advertising world are impressed with the American Movie Channel's portrayal of our day-to-day. And I believe they've done it again.
13. "The Five-Year Engagement" is a long but sweet journey
A five-year engagement seems like an eternity all on its own, so you'd think a nice, condensed two-hour version of one would at least have the advantage of picking around all the tedious, boring bits. You'd think.
14. "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" puts the "Arrr!" in rollicking
Move over, Jack Sparrow - there's a new pirate captain in town, and his name is, um, Pirate Captain.
15. Two different films about two different men
The Wisconsin Film Festival took over 10 theaters throughout Madison this past week. I made a surgical strike Saturday to take in the world premiers of two documentaries that could not have been more different.
16. Mad Men meme: Draping
I like a good Internet meme as much (or more) than the next guy, but I always thought the phenomenon of planking was especially dumb. Its short-lived successor, owling, was a little funny, but I certainly never tried it. Don't even get me started on Tebowing. Draping, on the other hand, is a meme I can get into.
17. "The Lucky One" can't say the same for audiences
Nicholas Sparks, most famously known as the author who created the source novel for the blockbuster tearjerker "The Notebook," "Dear John" and others, is returning to the big screens with "The Lucky One" this weekend. And, much like his previous offerings, this one delivers the similarly bland, vanilla romance security blanket moviegoers have come to expect from him.
18. Wisconsin in the national eye
It isn't anything new to those of us who realize that we Wisconsinites are often the test subject for national trends. For national TV outlets covering politics, Wisconsin is firmly on their radar.
19. "American Reunion" delivers the usual big dumb fun
After two sequels, four spin-offs and plenty of sex jokes, the "American Pie" franchise is back with its third official sequel, "American Reunion." Fans can rest assured it's packed with all the same hair-brained antics and juvenile scheming as its predecessors, and for those who aren't fans - come on, you weren't going to see it anyway.
20. "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" is an exercise in cinematic balance
Based on a novel, parlayed into a screenplay by the man who helped bring "127 Hours" and "Slumdog Millionaire" to life and directed by the man behind "The Cider House Rules" and "Chocolat": "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" has some serious heft behind it. And with due cause; there's a lot going on, and without this collective experience "Salmon Fishing" could have easily been swept away under the current of its own story.
21. "The Hunger Games" will have you dying for more
After much anticipation, "The Hunger Games" has arrived. The big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' first young adult novel in her Hunger Games trilogy is almost guaranteed a blockbuster smash from its literary fans. "Hunger Games" should not, however, be relegated to "Twilight" status by the uninitiated - this newest YA sensation packs serious substance and has been translated into a powerful movie experience.
22. Drive the vote and make Donald the "Dancing with the Stars" champ
Today, of course, Donald Driver takes to the dance floor as he pairs with Peta Murgatroyd on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." Here's how to vote for the Packers wide receiver.
23. Calling all films for the fourth annual Milwaukee Film Festival
Milwaukee Film is now accepting entries for the fourth annual Milwaukee Film Festival, to be held Sept. 27-Oct. 11. Works of all genres, forms and lengths will be accepted through Friday, June 15.
24. Talking "Breaking Bad" and more with "Walt, Jr"
If you've read any of my annual year-end "best of" picks over the years, you already know that I think AMC's "Breaking Bad" is the best show on TV. So, my hand was already tipped my hand when I sat down with RJ Mitte last night, the actor who plays Walt, Jr," at the Taste of Milwaukee event at the Hilton.
25. "John Carter" brings extraterrestrial entertainment to theaters
There seem to be a lot of anniversary movie releases lately. Most recently is "John Carter," a movie based on a series of sci-fi stories which debuted 100 years ago. This centennial tribute is unique, however, in that it stepped up and delivered a worthy big-screen spectacle.
