Why I love blizzards
Yesterday, I blogged about one of the reasons that blizzards drive me crazy, that many of my neighbors left our alley unplowed all day. At 4 p.m., having already spent the morning taking care of my own property, I sucked it up and shoveled an extra 30 yards or so to clear the path. It was a cathartic experience, really, and it opened my mind to write today's blog: why I actually love blizzards.
Other than a few inconveniences, blizzards are a lot of fun -- at least for the first few.
Here's what I love about them most. Chime in with your own reasons using the Talkback feature below:
Hi, neighbor: Shoveling and digging out, it's great to see neighbors lending a helping hand. My neighbor one house to the south used his more powerful snowblower to clear the sidewalks two houses in each direction; while in the alley, my neighbor across the street joined me to blast our way to the corner. In nice weather, most of us are strangers. During a blizzard, we're a community team, working for the same common goal.
Drifting: When you have a place to go, driving on the empty streets after a blizzard resembles a video game -- albeit a slow-motion one. It's fun to make impossible turns and avoid snowbanks and other obstacles. As long as you are very, very careful, it's pretty great.
Zombieland: The quiet emptiness of city streets make a blizzard feel like a zombie apocalypse. While I'm not rooting for an actual nuclear winter, for a few hours, it's surreal to see a bustling city come screeching to a frozen halt.
White beauty: I'd rather see palm trees and oceans, but there's a natural beauty of Milwaukee coated in snow. (After Feb. 15 or so, I retract this statement: old, dirty snow is just depressing.)
Slow down: When you're stuck and everything is closed, you have no choice but to slow down and take it easy. Catch up on the DVR. Work from home. Drink hot chocolate. Make a snowman. Yes, it's forced, but every now and then, it's a welcome respite.
Mandatory exercise: There's no getting out of shoveling, and based on how much I found myself sweating yesterday, I bet it's pretty good exercise.
Hype machine: I find all the media hype surrounding blizzards to be a little silly, but I, like everyone else, tune in to watch. Now that I know most of Milwaukee's morning show anchors and reporters, I genuinely feel sorry for the crazy shifts they're pulling during these snow events. But all the snowpocalypse coverage is sort of fun.
Countdown to summer: People who live in places like San Diego probably take their warm weather for granted. Not us in Wisconsin. Chilling temperatures and tons of snow make me appreciate beautiful summer days even more. And, on a day like yesterday, I have to smile: Brewers pitchers and catchers report very, very soon.

I'm with you on the Zombieland and the Milwaukee-coated-in-white thoughts, plus, I just wanted to be out walking in that wind and snow to experience Nature's fury. That was awesome. And admit it, you ARE rooting for a nuclear winter. I know I am.

Are you our next Web developer?
Published May 23, 2012
OnMilwaukee.com is growing, and that means we've created a new position that needs to be filled. Call it programmer or Web developer, but this an especially exciting job, because it means you're an instrumental part in building the ever-evolving software that powers Milwaukee's best (and only) daily online magazine.
Just add bacon: Brookfield bar porks up
Published May 22, 2012
If the bacon craze is winding down, don't tell that to the Saloon on Calhoun, which recently changed its name to the Saloon on Calhoun With Bacon. The popular western suburban sports bar and grill, nestled in a most unexpected location at 17000 W. Capitol Dr., is going bananas for bacon, putting the pork in everything from cocktails to apps to desserts.
All these years later, wood-fired pizza still delights
Published May 17, 2012
Oakland Trat is now SoLo Pizza, but fortunately, many of their recipes remain. And very fortunately, they dropped off three pizzas to the hungry staff of OnMilwaukee.com today. I was pretty happy that the barbecue chicken one tastes exactly the same.
Mid-year update on my 2012 predictions
Published May 15, 2012
Back in December, I wrote a blog post called "Bold and not-so-bold predictions for 2012." Almost halfway through the year, I see now that one has come true, two have not, and two are yet to be decided (but I still stand by my predictions).
Is this recall election fair?
Published May 14, 2012
As far as I'm concerned, recall elections were designed to deal with politicians who have committed acts of gross malfeasance. People like former Sheboygan Mayor Jim Ryan, who was apparently in a constant state of breaking the law, come to mind. He was tossed out office, and rightfully so. But while some are alleging shady business on behalf of the governor, the reason most people want to recall Walker is because they don't like how he's governed in the last year and a half.
On the mound to redemption
Published May 8, 2012
In 2009, former Brewers pitcher Seth McClung was coming off a season in which he helped Milwaukee advance to its first post-season appearance in 26 years. In 2010, he was out of baseball, coaching girls' high school basketball in Florida. With a surgically repaired knee and eager for more more shot, this winter McClung e-mailed Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin, asking for a minor league contract with the team he identified with the most. Now, at 31, McClung is healthy again, having shaken off a lot of rust. He knows this is his last chance to pitch his way back into the bigs. We spent the day with him, on the road, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Are the Brewers sunk?
Published May 7, 2012
Nobody should panic, but the Brewers had better start playing some good baseball, because the rest of the division might not wait around for them to improve. However, I'm not sure the three season-ending (or almost season-ending injuries) are as big of a deal as paranoid fans - myself occasionally included - think they are.
You don't have to be Mexican to dish up authentic Mexican cuisine
Published May 4, 2012
Milwaukee is widely known for having great Mexican cuisine, and indeed, most of its restaurants that serve food from south of the border are run by first or second generation Latinos. But that's not exclusively true. Just look at La Perla and Bel Air Cantina for proof.
Building a better tortilla
Published May 3, 2012
Nestled in the middle of the La Perla, behind a glass window, employees oversee as a special ovens flattens dough, then picks it up to start the cooking process. The hot surface holds the now flat "pre-tortilla" as it cooks, until it falls off and spirals across three levels. Then, when baked to perfection, the cook peels them off, ready to serve hot, fresh, homemade tortillas.
A quick chat with Brewers prospect Mark Rogers
Published May 2, 2012
I was in Iowa last weekend for an upcoming feature article on Nashville Sounds and formers Brewers pitcher Seth McClung. Before Saturday's game against the Iowa Cubs, I watched the team's 2004 first-round draft pick, Mark Rogers, take batting practice. It was a thing of beauty.
